{"id":132,"date":"2015-10-19T14:58:33","date_gmt":"2015-10-19T21:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daves-turned-art.com\/?page_id=132"},"modified":"2015-10-19T14:58:33","modified_gmt":"2015-10-19T21:58:33","slug":"the-turning-process","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/daves-turned-art.com\/index.php\/the-turning-process\/","title":{"rendered":"The Turning Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For non turners, I thought I&#8217;d share a little about the process and tools that we use.<\/p>\n<p>We start with a chainsaw, pickup\/trailer to gather wood from our urban forest. \u00a0Your little chainsaw won&#8217;t cut it. \u00a0This is always time consuming, and can be very frustrating. \u00a0Trees that come out in storms can mean nasty weather, but gather it or it is gone. \u00a0Trees being taken out for other reasons frequently require last minute changes to plans. \u00a0Unhealthy trees can be a complete waste, sometimes all they are is rot. \u00a0The wood that we get is very heavy. \u00a0Large pieces can weigh 150 lbs. or more.<\/p>\n<p>After we take the wood home, we process the wood into turning stock. \u00a0This usually takes a day or two for a trailer load of wood. \u00a0I say we, because the pieces are usually too heavy to be handled by one person safely. \u00a0The pieces are then sealed with an end grain seal to slow the drying process.<\/p>\n<p>We are finally ready to start turning. \u00a0Speed here depends upon the turner. \u00a0I don&#8217;t focus on speed, but enjoy the process. \u00a0Step back and plan the piece that you want to make. \u00a0Will it be turned green, or through what is called Twice Turned? \u00a0Will it be a bowl, hollow form, lidded box, etc? \u00a0For rough turned objects, the turning must now be dried for 3 to 9 months depending upon the type of wood. \u00a0Green turning results in oblong turnings. \u00a0Sometimes that is ok, but a rocking bowl on the table is not what I&#8217;m going for.<\/p>\n<p>After the turning is dry, I re-turn it to final shape. \u00a0If I&#8217;m embellishing or adding stone I can now start that process.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing and sanding can take me 3 months, depending upon the type of finish.<\/p>\n<p>So, from a tree coming down to a finished product, it is usually at least a year. \u00a0Yes, that means I have a stock of wood at various stages of the process. \u00a0Lots of space, and time!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For non turners, I thought I&#8217;d share a little about the process and tools that we use.
